泰德・喬亞 Ted Gioia
泰德.喬亞集鋼琴家、評論人、學者、歷史學家與教育家於一身。他已經出版十一本著作,包括有《爵士樂史》(The History of Jazz)與《三角洲藍調》(Delta Blues)──兩書皆獲得《紐約時報》年度百大好書的殊榮。他鑽研音樂的社會史所出版的三冊著作,分別是《情愛之歌》(Love Songs)、《工作之歌》(Work Songs)與《療癒之歌》(Healing Songs),則全部榮獲美國作曲家、作家和出版人協會(ASCAP)的迪恩斯.泰勒獎(Deems Taylor Award)。喬亞先後畢業於史丹佛大學與牛津大學;先前曾任教於史丹佛大學音樂系的所屬學院。喬亞既被譽為當今最傑出的音樂歷史學家之一,同時也是那些來自過去、今日與未來的歌曲的最佳引路人。

我個人研習這些音樂的過程,一方面是誤打誤撞,一方面又是費盡苦功。市面上最後出現了種種的「樂譜雜本」(fake books),算是解開了若干謎團;不過,我幾乎在二十歲之前,都從未見過任何一本這類(一般上非法出版的)歌譜彙編集子。當我首次翻閱《The Real Book》這本書時,甚至只是覽讀目錄,也讓我頓時豁然開朗起來。而我相信,許多其他爵士新手也同樣經歷過如此茅塞頓開的一刻。該書在一九七〇年代,以地下出版的方式開始流通,內容蒐羅了許多爵士樂曲的導引譜(lead sheet)。今日懷有抱負的年輕音樂人幾乎難以想像,在不過幾十年前,這門藝術形式竟然渾沌至此的境況。在我所就讀的學校中,沒有一所開設有爵士樂的系列課程,甚至連一堂針對爵士樂的解說課程也付之闕如。而大多數的方法論書籍則皆無濟於事,因為,這門藝術形式的獨特文化,往往助長了某種出於競爭意識因而諱莫如深的氣氛。職是之故,僅僅得知了這些務必熟悉的歌曲的「歌名」,在當時來說,就代表了你向前踏出了一大步;而還能一窺導引譜,則不啻是三生有幸。
長久以來,我經常希望擁有一本涉及這一整批樂曲的手冊;只要單單一冊在手,就能指引我探入海量的爵士樂曲目,並對我點明經典錄音版本的發展方向──這實在讓人夢寐以求。在我早期學習這一批樂曲所暗藏的微言隱義的過程中,有幾本參考書籍頗有助益,特別是艾勒克.懷爾德(Alec Wilder)所撰述的《美國流行歌曲》(American Popular Song, 1972)一書,讓我獲益良多。不過,在這些書籍中,甚至是最具參考價值的論著,盡皆一成不變地聚焦在總體曲目中的一小部分歌曲而已(主要是來自百老匯與錫盤巷[Tin Pan Alley]的歌曲),而且,鮮少處理這些歌曲與爵士樂本身發展的關連性。在我的學習時期,並不存在切合我的需要的書籍,而現在同樣一無所有。我想要鑽研這些歌曲,以便獲得讓爵士樂演出得以更上層樓的靈感泉源(然而,經常卻也正是這樣的想法,讓人大大遠離了,作曲家當初可能企圖表現的風格)。那一支支歌曲,既是爵士樂藝術形式的基石,同時也是進行即興表演的跳板,與引逗創意再詮釋的媒介──我期盼能有一本以這種觀點來解說作品的指南手冊。
