不少同學可能有這樣的困惑：明明學了很久英語，也讀了很多文章，但一到口語和寫作，頭腦就一片空白，之前學過的東西好像都想不起來了。
出現這一問題的原因在於平時積累的知識不夠體系化。有些人雖然讀了很多文章，但他們僅僅是泛泛而讀，沒有對其中出現的知識點進行歸納總結，這樣讀完後記不住東西，自然也就無法應用。閱讀材料的選擇也是一個問題。如果讀的東西太雜，今天讀一篇散文，明天讀一篇小說，後天再讀一篇新聞，這樣也不利於形成體系化的知識。
怎樣解決這一問題呢？進行“主題閱讀”是一個比較好的方法。“主題閱讀”是指在一段時間內集中精讀和某一主題有關的文章，以此來積累與該主題相關的各種表達。通過這種方式閱讀記憶效果更好，學習者更加容易學以致用。
對於主題閱讀的材料，外刊就是一個很好的選擇。外刊文章往往信息量大，用詞精准，同時文中很多觀點也具有思辨性。通過閱讀這樣的材料，我們可以積累大量與主題相關的知識。
