Extraterritorial Immigration Control: Legal Challenges

Ryan (law, U. of Kent, UK) and Mitsilegas (European Criminal Law, U. of London, UK) present a collection of 14 essays analyzing the legal challenges posed by contemporary phenomena of extraterritorial immigration control. The volume begins with overview chapters on legal aspects of developments in extraterritorial immigration control and on the manner in which said developments have impacted the wider immigration control regime. The next section focuses on the position of extraterritorial immigration control within international law and contains chapters on responsibility for non-refoulement, the law of the sea, and the Migrant Smuggling Protocol. The focus then switches to extraterritorial immigration control by the European Union and its member states in chapters on international protection, human rights principles, Frontex (a.k.a. the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union), and the transformation of border controls in Europe.
