Recollecting Resonances: Indonesian-Dutch Musical Encounters

The Dutch have a long history of gazing upon the people they have conquered, and taking whatever portion of the culture they admired. In music there was much to gaze upon, and a long time in which the Dutch could pick and choose from other cultures. The fourteen essays examine their musical encounters, listing instances in which the Dutch listened and appropriated carefully, particularly in the case of the musical heritage from Indonesia. The contributors include photos, past and present issues of Javanese/European musical hybridity, the musical influence of the court of the Sultan of Buton, mutual musical modernism in the twentieth century, Mangkunrgoro VII and correspondence with Kunst, encounters in Sudanese music, Indonesian musicians in the Netherlands, and recognition of Moluccan issues in music.
