Listening to Early Modern Catholicism: Perspectives from Musicology

Taking a longue durée view, musicologists explore early modern Catholicism from 1450 to 1750, though several chapters cluster around the central century of 1550-1650. Geographically, they inevitably emphasize Rome, but range from Siena to Barcelona, Germany to France, from an English enclave in Spain to outposts of Jesuit missions from the Mediterraneans to the Andes and beyond. After reviewing the state of research, they offer such perspectives as liturgical music and liturgical experience in early modern Italy, musical dispatches from the heavenly Jerusalem, catechismum modulans docebat: teaching the doctrine through singing in early modern Catholicism, music for the soul: death and piety in 16th-century Barcelona, and confraternity multipart singing: contemporary practice and hypothetical scenarios for the early modern era.
