Thinking with Castoriadis: Antipodean Essays

Thinking with Castoriadis explores the work of the Greek-French philosopher Cornelius Castoriadis who developed a ground-breaking philosophy of imagination and social creation--a theory of how societies come into being. The volume explores the many-sided implications of Castoriadis’ social thought and the way it intersects with and diverges from other major currents of social theory and philosophy: civilizational, urbanist, Hellenist, meta-historical, hermeneutical, phenomenological, ontological, antinomical, and Kantian. Contributors to the volume are long-time participants in an annual conference on Castoriadis’ work that ran for 15 years in Sydney and Melbourne.

Peter Murphy is Adjunct Professor of Social Sciences at La Trobe University and formerly Professor of Arts and Society at James Cook University.
