I am a Survivor

Find the bay of hope . . . Right next to the ocean of grief stands the bay of hope. It’s made of billions of sand particles, each one insignificant on its own, but together a force to reckon with. As an oncologist, it’s difficult to come home and have a normal meal or sleep without being awakened by a wet pillow, unsure if the tears were mine or those of a patient’s. I have understood that in this extraordinary universe, I am but a mere speck, as small and inconsequential as the sand particle on the beach. But with the bond that I have built with my patients, I am resolute, as indomitable as any avenger of cancer. These survivors have taught me more than what medicine has. These are not 108 stories. This is the future of our battle against cancer. These are the footsteps these survivors have taken, from tears to smiles.
