前 言

巴爾塔沙．葛拉西安，1601年出生於西班牙。是十七世紀著名的思想家。青少年時期，他就開始修習哲學與文學。歷任軍中神父、告解神父、宣教師、教授及行政人員等職。他從未出任重要公職，但是常與政治人物交遊往來，這些人生經驗都成為他寫作思考的源泉。

1637年，其處女作《英雄》問世，旋即引起轟動。1640年討論領袖資質的

《政治家》出版。1643年，《詩之才藝》出版。1647年，其巔峰之作《智慧書》問世。因其筆鋒犀利、譏諷政治，被耶穌會警告，未獲批准出版。1651年，寓言小說《批評家》問世。為此，他被耶穌會解除了教席，放逐到一個鄉下小鎮，直至1658年終老於此。葛拉西安生活的年代正處於宗教改革浪潮之中，其一生與耶穌會有著千絲萬縷的關係，這兩個事件對葛拉西安思想有著重要的影響。

《智慧書》文風簡練辛辣，多暗含典故。葛拉西安的文風使得其與讀者的關係處於一種很微妙的關係之中。作者如擊劍般與讀者周旋進退，他的意圖多方巧飾，避免手中之牌一次攤盡，保持延宕懸疑，以隱曲幽微引人傾羨與尊敬。他在

文中寫到：「謹慎之人雖然自己十分清楚，卻總是說一半留一半」。葛拉西安的這種文風除了有審美上的追求，還有自我保護的考量。葛拉西安的文風顯示了其經驗之深厚，處事之周到圓滑，思想之獨到深刻。

《智慧書》300箴言述說處事智巧，與《論語》、《老子》有異曲同工之妙，待人接物講究圓而不方，欲臻於完美，人必須識實務而與世推移。全書警語多有交錯、對立之處，但可方便從多角度觀察人的處事之道。一個片段教我們如何以某種策略與人周旋，另一片段就交我們如何防禦這種巧計。生活本身就是黑白交錯而成，沒有誰的世界是純白或純黑的，箴言採取這種策略是極高明的智慧，沒有什麼處事原則是不需要變通的。

善惡是人居於人世間不得不面對的永恆話題，關於這個話題卻從來沒有一個定論，向來是見仁見智。要成為一個大器之人，在善惡這個問題上，每個人都應該有自己的獨到見解，明辨善惡是智慧的表現。善惡之路何其漫漫，何其艱難！

先賢之道讓我們領略前人之智慧，聖人之書讓我們日進千里。有此捷徑，何當獨行？讓我們與之同行，共勉之！

本書英譯本採用的是Joseph Jacob 1927年的版本，鑑於譯者能力有限，書中若有不足之處，敬請指正。

前 言
