外語是人生成功的一個重要工具。從曾經的「學會數理化，走遍天下都不怕」，到現在21世紀的人才必要的兩項「本領」和基本素質———外語能力和電腦技能，外語的重要性日益凸顯；進一步深入和經濟發展的全球化，使外語尤其是已成為一種國際語言的英語的重要性日益突出。
本書的編寫思路是，既注意打好語言基礎，又注重培養應用能力，特別是實際使用英語進行涉外交際的能力。在培養閱讀能力的同時，加強聽、說、寫、譯等語言技能的綜合訓練，尤其注重口頭和書面實用表達能力的訓練與培養，以適應學生入世以後對外交往的需要。
本書共有十個單元，每單元都由Get Started、Read and Explore、Practical Translation、Focused Writing四個部分組成，重點訓練學生的說、讀、寫、譯能力，提高學生實際使用英語進行涉外交際的能力，較好地體現了大學英語教學要全面培養、提高學生的英語綜合應用能力的大方向。
