The Active Reader series is a new three-level reading course for lower-intermediate to upper-intermediate students of American English. The books in the series provide learners with exposure to the various types of English texts they are likely to encounter in their in their reading, from academic passages to magazine articles.
The Active Reader series aims to familiarize students with the techniques and strategies needed to become better readers.
Reading strategies taught in the course include:
Scanning :which encourages students quickly to find specific
information
Skimming : which encourages students quickly to understand
the general meaning of the text
Reading for detail :which provides practice in careful reading
Reading for the main idea :which provides practice in identifying and
understanding the most important points in the text
Thinking about it :which allows students to relate to the text using their
personal experiences
The Active Reader series provides students with guidance on dealing with new and unfamiliar vocabulary through work on synonyms and antonyms, collocations and fixed expressions, and looking at words in context.
The Active Reader series also looks at grammar in context by having students see the structural patterns in the texts they are reading.
The Active Reader series gives learners the skills and the practice they need to go beyond understanding simple English passages, and enables them to appreciate a wide range of English texts.
