Giuseppe Pezzotti is a distinguished professor at Kansai Medical University, Japan, and emeritus professor at Kyoto Institute of Technology, Japan. He has been Vice President for Internationalization and Collaborative Research in Health Science at Kyoto Institute of Technology from 2017 to 2024 and a full tenured professor and leader of the Ceramic Physics Laboratory from 2000 to 2024. He graduated summa cum laude in mechanical engineering from Rome University "La Sapienza," Italy, in 1984 and holds six doctoral degrees in engineering (materials science; Osaka University), science (quantum chemistry; Kyoto University), medical science (orthopedics; Tokyo Medical University), medical science (immunology; Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine), agricultural science (food chemistry; Kyoto University), and pharmacy (Osaka Medical and Pharmaceutical University), all obtained in Japan, the country where he has been living for the past 39 years. Fluent in Japanese and capable of reading and writing it at a nearly native level, he was one of the first foreign nationals to obtain a tenured full professor position in a Japanese government university and has been the first Western-born trustee vice president in a Japanese national university. From 2002 to 2012, Prof. Pezzotti served as the director of the Research Institute for Nanoscience at Kyoto Institute of Technology. From 2005 to 2015, he was an adjunct professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Research of Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, USA. From 2009 to 2021, he held an invited professorship from the Department of Medical Engineering of Osaka University, from 2010 to 2017 he was a visiting professor in the Department of Molecular Cell Physiology of Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, since 2016 he is an invited professor in the Department of Orthopedics of the Tokyo Medical University, since 2018 he is an adjunct professor in the Department of Immunology of the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, since 2020 he is an honorary fellow and board member of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, and since 2025 he is the director of Kansai Medical University-Ca’ Foscari University of Venice Academic HUB. Professor Pezzotti has so far published 780 scientific papers, 3 books as the sole author, 1 book as an editor, 15 book chapters, and holds 14 patents, including a world patent regarding nanoscale stress microscopy in the scanning electron microscope; he has been listed among the top 2% most influential scientists of all disciplines in the world in 2021 according to Scopus (updated science-wide author databases standardized citation indicators). He has licensed his intellectual properties to more than 20 major industrial firms around the world and serves as a consultant. His book entitled Advanced Materials for Joint Implants (published in 2013) has become a landmark for scientists and medical doctors working in the field of joint arthroplasty. In 2013, Professor Pezzotti became a fellow of the Academy of Science (Bologna Institute) in appreciation of his advanced studies of Raman spectroscopy, linking quantum mechanics to medical sciences. In 2015 and 2016, the City of Kyoto awarded him with a City Prize for two years consecutively for his contribution to developing and progressing the internationalization of the City of Kyoto. Among a number of scientific and technical awards, in 2017, he was awarded the prestigious Prize for Scientific Research of the Ministry of Education of Japan (MEXT) for his invention of the nanoscale stress microscope and his fundamental contribution to the Japanese industrial world (first foreigner as an individual recipient). In 2021, the Italian President awarded him the title of Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy.
