Dr. Mohammad Azhar Aziz stands as a beacon of innovation in the realm of cancer research, with a profound commitment to unraveling the mysteries of the disease. Born into a family that valued education and inquiry, Azhar’s journey from Lucknow to becoming a leading cancer researcher has been marked by intellectual rigor and an unyielding passion for scientific discovery. His father was a physician and his mother an educationist and homemaker providing an ecosystem where questioning was a norm.

Azhar was born and raised in Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh, India. He went to Christ Church College for schooling followed by an undergraduate degree (BSc) from Bappa Sri Narain Vocational Degree College, Lucknow University.

Azhar’s academic odyssey began at Aligarh Muslim University, where he immersed himself in the world of biological science. His thirst for knowledge and a desire to make a tangible impact on human health led him to Biotechnology. Recognizing the potential of biotechnology in transforming the landscape of cancer research, Azhar delved into interdisciplinary studies that melded biology with other disciplines like engineering.

Venturing further into his academic pursuits, Azhar honed his skills at the Center for Biotechnology at Jawaharlal Nehru University. Here, under the mentorship of leading experts, he pioneered groundbreaking research at the intersection of Biotechnology and molecular biology. His work led to the development of pioneering work on vaccine development.

He went to Case Western Reserve University and The Cleveland Clinic to engage in cutting-edge interdisciplinary work on integrated cancer research. He worked on National Cancer Institute, USA-sponsored projects on systems biology. His work has been instrumental in developing innovative approaches to detect, treat, and understand the intricacies of cancer at the molecular level.

Azhar established the spirit of integration at King Abdullah International Medical Research Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He built a colorectal cancer program by spinning together a team of surgeons, pathologists, computational biologists, and molecular biologists.

After working for 16 years abroad, he joined Aligarh Muslim University to serve as director of the Interdisciplinary Nanotechnology Center. His investigations into nano-scale drug delivery systems for targeted cancer therapy opened new avenues for precision medicine, earning him recognition as a trailblazer in the field. He has published several scientific papers in journals of international repute. He is an awardee of Best Researcher, Young Scientist, and several other prominent awards from international institutions and agencies.

As a faculty member at the Interdisciplinary Nanotechnology Center, Azhar has continued to drive transformative research initiatives. His leadership has fostered a collaborative environment that brings together scientists, engineers, and medical experts to address the multifaceted challenges of cancer. Under his guidance, the center has become a hub for cutting-edge research, attracting scholars and students from around the world. He recently established ’Cancer Nanomedicine consortium’ to further the spirit of integration and collaborative work.

Azhar’s commitment to bridging the gap between scientific inquiry and real-world applications has resulted in numerous patents and publications. His innovative contributions have not only advanced our understanding of cancer but have also paved the way for the development of novel nanotherapeutic interventions. He strongly believes that ’all ailments have a cure except old age’ and this fuels his passion for finding new concepts and strategies for cure.

Beyond the laboratory, Azhar is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of scientists. His mentorship has inspired a cadre of aspiring researchers, ensuring that the legacy of groundbreaking cancer research continues to flourish.
