Dr. Wang Kai graduated from Tongji University in July 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in urban planning and received his master’s and doctoral degrees in urban planning and design from Tsinghua University in June 1997 and June 2006, respectively. From 1986 to the present, he has worked at the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design, where he was the chief engineer of the Shenzhen Branch, the deputy director of the Planning Institute, the director of the Regional Institute, the director of the Urban and Rural Planning Research Office, the deputy chief planner of the Academy, and is currently the chief planner of the Academy, a professor-level senior urban planner. He is also a member of the Expert Committee of the Ministry of Construction, an expert of the National Development Bank, a member of the Board of Directors of Urban Planning Society of China, as well as the secretary general of the Academic Committee on Urban Economy and Regional Planning and the chairman of the Youth Working Committee. He presided over and participated in the National Urban System Planning (2005-2020), Beijing Urban Master Plan (2004-2020), Hangzhou City Development Strategic Plan, Ningbo City Development Strategic Plan, Xiamen City Development Strategic Plan, Liaoning Coastal Economic Belt Construction Plan, Taiyuan City Master Plan (2008-2020), and Qinhuangdao City Master Plan (1991-2010).
