　　Animal Farm, published in 1945, is a satirical novel by British novelist and essayist George Orwell (1903-1950), pseud. of Eric Arthur Blair. Orwell is best known for Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). As a socialist, he was a keen critic of imperialism, fascism, Stalinism, and capitalism. His works are concerned with the sociopolitical conditions of his time.

　　Animal Farm, with great critical and popular success, is a witty, satirical allegory about the failure of Soviet totalitarianism. Some events in the book are based on events from the Soviet Union during the Stalin era.

　　This novel is ostensibly about a group of animals who oust the humans from the farm and run it themselves, only to have it corrupted into a brutal tyranny on its own. This idea of a revolution betraying its supposed aims is a chief issue of Animal Farm.

　　George Orwell, pseudonym of Eric Arthur Blair (1903–1950), was an English novelist, essayist, journalist, and critic. He is ranked as one of the most influential English writers of the 20th century. He is best known for the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) and the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945).

　　Orwell's work continues to influence popular and political culture, and the term Orwellian — descriptive of totalitarian or authoritarian social practices — has entered the language together with several of his neologisms, including cold war, Big Brother, thought police, Room 101, doublethink, and thoughtcrime.

　　喬治．歐威爾（George Orwell, 1903-1950）是英國知名的左派小說家，也是一位新聞記者和社會評論家，被當時代的人稱為「當代的良心」，其作品在傳達出社會正義的問題。歐威爾的代表作有《動物農莊》（Animal Farm, 1945）和《一九八四》（Nineteen Eighty-Four, 1949），內容皆以反烏托邦為主題，這兩本小說也都是世界文壇政治諷喻小說的經典之作。

　　歐威爾出生於印度，印度當時是英國的殖民地，不過他在兩歲時便與家人回到英國。由於家境並不寬裕，歐威爾後來靠著考取獎學金，進入英國最知名的中學「伊頓公學」（Eton College）。這是英國皇室弟子就讀的貴族學校，相形之下，歐威爾在學校裡就成了被歧視的對象。伊頓公學畢業後，因為家境無法供他繼續念書，便投考公務員，在緬甸當了五年的殖民警察。這些經歷，都造就了他的反極權思想，以及日後在文壇上的成就。

　　辭去警察的工作後，歐威爾在英國和歐洲大陸四處流轉，期間擔任過洗碗工、教師、書店店員和碼頭工人等工作，其社會主義的思想也逐漸成型。29歲時，首次以喬治．歐威爾的筆名發表《巴黎倫敦落魄記》（Down and Out in Paris and London）。

　　1936年，西班牙內戰爆發，歐威爾和美國大文豪海明威一樣，為反對法西斯主義，志願參與了這場西班牙內戰，並在戰爭中負傷，被打穿喉嚨。歐威爾曾在文章中表示，在西班牙內戰後，其所寫的每一行嚴肅作品，都是直接或間接在反對極權主義。1939年九月，第二次世界大戰全面爆發。1941至1943年間，他在英國廣播公司BBC從事反法西斯宣傳工作。他離開BBC之後，轉而擔任《論壇報》（Tribune）編輯。

　　1944年，歐威爾完成了《動物農莊》，但遭到出版社的拒絕，一直到隔年八月才出版。《動物農莊》一出版，便佳評如潮。1948年，歐威爾完成了另一部代表作《一九八四》，並於1949出版。然而隔年一月，歐威爾因肺結核病逝於倫敦大學醫院，享年46歲。
