這本書是給外國人學習台語的入門指南，也是一份文化邀請卡。因為語言不僅是溝通的工具，更是一扇窗，讓我們窺見一個文化的日常風景與情感紋理。書中從日常生活出發，精選一百個在街頭巷尾、菜市場、夜市、朋友聊天中最常出現的台語詞彙與表達方式，每一個例句對話都來自真實的使用情境。你能學到如何回應他人的關心（不只是說「謝謝」，而是「呷飽未？」的那份人情味）、如何理解朋友之間的調侃與親暱、如何分辨「喔」和「啦」之間細膩的語氣差異，甚至是為什麼台灣人有時候說「無啦」其實是在婉轉地表示「有啦」——這些，才是台語的靈魂。
本書採用了漢語拼音的標音方式，並輔以規範的台語羅馬字（TLPA），讓不同語言背景的讀者都能找到合適的學習入口，同時也以此做為想進一步學習之讀者的墊腳石。所收的每個詞彙或短語都有中文與英文說明和翻譯，以及實際對話範例與文化說明，幫助你學會「怎麼說」，而且讓你更了解台灣在地的生活，說不定也能因此使你聽懂在地人的幽默、情緒與日常。
台語是我一直熟悉的語言，但長大後才懂得珍惜的語言。在寫這本書的過程中，也讓我重新與台語連結。如今，我想把這份語言的溫度、彈性與幽默，用最親切的方式，分享給每一位對台灣感興趣的人。如果你正在學華語，也許會驚訝台灣人的「中文」竟然這麼不一樣；如果你已經在台灣生活一段時間，我相信這本書會幫助你打開更多交流的門；如果你是語言學習愛好者，那麼你將會在台語的聲調變化、句尾助詞與語氣詞裡，發現無限的樂趣與挑戰。

Taiwanese for Real Life: The Phrases You Need to Know
Foreword
If Mandarin Chinese is in the mouths of the 23 million people in Taiwan, then Taiwanese is in their hearts. It beats through the hum of orders shouted at the night market, conversations with family over dinner, city names on street signs, and song lyrics written by generations past and present, shaping Taiwan’s cultural identity for centuries.
For years, I’ve heard a familiar sentiment echoed throughout the community of foreigners living in Taiwan: “Mandarin isn’t enough.” It’s true—Mandarin might open doors, but Taiwanese opens arms. It allows for deeper moments of connection with local friends, host families, neighbors, and strangers who light up when they hear their mother tongue.
My own journey with Taiwanese began not in a classroom, but through music. Having fallen in love with a Taiwanese song, I posted a cover video online. Only after it reached millions of people did I realize how I had tapped into a cultural memory, a community, and a sense of place. This is a language that carries rich emotion, humor, and resilience through a dark, oppressive past.
This book presents an opportunity to build on the foundation many language learners already possess. Taiwanese is represented through multiple writing systems, some based on romanization and others based on characters. The system Peiting Tsai developed for this book, rather than acting as a new standalone system, instead serves as a gateway for Pinyin-proficient Mandarin Chinese learners to ease into learning Taiwanese. By aligning the learning process with a tool already familiar to Mandarin speakers, she paves an accessible, intuitive path forward.
Peiting Tsai brings a wealth of experience and insight to this book. As a Mandarin Chinese teacher who has taught diplomats, scholars, and professionals from all over the world, she has a deep understanding of how non-native speakers learn and where they get stuck. Taiwan is a multilingual society. Besides Mandarin Chinese, Taiwanese is one of the most widely spoken languages. This book is written for foreign visitors, migrant workers, new residents in Taiwan, and Taiwanese who want to teach Taiwanese to their foreign friends.Taiwanese is interwoven with Mandarin in daily life and is an integral part of society in Taiwan. When you're shopping at night markets or watching TV shows and news, you always hear some Taiwanese. However, books designed to help foreigners learn Taiwanese are relatively scarce, and many of the books are written in Mandarin, which may be difficult for learners unfamiliar with characters. The content of this book is presented in both Mandarin and English, and Hanyu Pinyin is used to transcribe Taiwanese. It focuses on commonly-used words and phrases for daily life with practical scenarios and examples to help learners use what they've learned right away.

台灣師範大學華語文教學研究所碩士，曾擔任美國德州休士頓萊斯大學(Rice University)中文講師、大學進修推廣教育中文班教師、律師事務所中文班教師、以及Freeman Foundation 德州中文教師培訓講師。教授過從初級到高級各個程度與不同年齡背景的學生。2015年獲選萊斯大學最受歡迎教師；2016年榮獲美國中文教師學會第二屆國際中文教學論壇最佳教學活動。著有《台灣華語句型50》，目前為美國Diplomatic Language Services教師。
Peiting Tsai holds an M.A. in Teaching Chinese as Second Language from National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei. With over twenty years of experience teaching Mandarin as a foreign and second language, she has worked with learners of all levels and diverse backgrounds. One of her classroom activities was recognized as a “Best Teaching Activity” at the CLTA Second International Symposium on Chinese Teaching and Learning in 2016. Her teaching and research interests include integrating TV dramas into language instruction, as well as exploring discourse, pragmatics, and cognitive linguistics. She is the author of Taiwan Mandarin: 50 Patterns Not in Your Textbook, a book that highlights colloquial patterns and cultural insights often missed in standard curricula. Passionate about cultural exchange, she enjoys sharing her native Taiwanese culture with her students through language teaching.
