Sun Yat-sen, Life and Legacy in 150 Years
It has become almost customary to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen, founding father of the Republic of China (ROC), on and around his birthday anniversaries by publishing collections of his photographs. Through the years, those pictorial albums accumulated voluminously, but the photos are almost identical, due to the limited availability. And the presentations are more or less chronological, highlighting major periods of his life -- birth and youth, schooling at home and abroad, public campaign for revolution, and stay in Canton to build up a revolutionary force in his later years. Repeating and repeating, many publications fell into a stereotype ritual that dulled the true motive for remembering this great figure who bailed China out of imperial decline and created a blueprint for a modern democracy and for reexamining his legacy along China’s trajectory from decline to rise.
This means Dr. Sun should be commemorated in a dynamic continuum, reflecting his footprint in the context of China’s history. This is the editorial intent of this pictorial collection, titled “Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Life and Legacy in China’s 150 Years”, which marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of the ROC founding father in 2016. This book puts aside tidbits of his life, and links his life and legacy with China’s milestones from a dying emperor, through world wars to a democratic ROC in Taiwan. This is not “Pictures of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Life,” but “Dr. Sun Yat-sen through China in 150 years.” His figure is visible in China’s most turbulent years, his blueprints for China have been embodied by his successors, and his aspiration to usher Chinese into modern civilization is carried on by more than four generations of Chinese. He, with idealism, dedication, and philosophies for a better China, survives as a giant role model for all Chinese.
Based upon our vast and valuable collections of historical photographs, our staff members have used digital colorization to give these black-and-white images new life. Many pictures showing the 1911 Wuchang Uprising that toppled the Qing Dynasty and the national ceremony for his burial appear in this book for the first time in print. With all the credit going to our staff members, we have created this pictorial presentation with both historical and artistic values for collector’s edition to mark the 150th anniversary of Dr. Sun’s birth.
