Lifelong fastidious bachelor John Gainsworth caused quite a stir in the village when he proposed to Daphne Noble, a modern young woman who seems his opposite in every way. Daphne and John are relieved when tongues decide to wag about something other than their odd romance... cricket.

For the first time in decades, it looks like the village of Mill-Upon-Mortlake might trounce their lifelong rival of Shrewsberry at cricket and secure a spot in the district finals. With Constable Cranford up at bat as well as set to bowl, he’s a powerful threat that will surely be Shrewsberry’s downfall. Mill-Upon-Mortlake to win? That’s a wager the entire village will take-which makes it rather problematic when the local bookie, Jerome Hatfield, is found murdered after the match!

With Constable Cranford under pressure to find the murderer (without fainting or accidentally destroying evidence) and keep his job when the necessity of a village constable is called into question, he once again turns to the detective duo of Noble and Gainsworth to solve the crime of the murdered man and the missing money.
