　　1962年12月，英國的一個鄉村小鎮裡，兩對夫妻又開始了新的一天。艾瑞克．派瑞與妻子艾琳剛從倫敦搬來，艾瑞克是個醫生，今天按照慣例出門探訪病人，把懷孕的妻子單獨留在家裡。艾琳尚未能適應鄉下的生活，心中有諸多不滿，卻只能被困在老房子，徒增夫妻二人之間越來越深的隔閡。

Andrew Miller’s first novel, Ingenious Pain, was published by Sceptre in 1997; it won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and the Grinzane Cavour Prize for the best foreign novel published in Italy. It has been followed by Casanova, Oxygen, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the Whitbread Novel of the Year Award in 2001, The Optimists, One Morning Like a Bird, Pure, which won the Costa Book of the Year Award in 2011, The Crossing, Now We Shall Be Entirely Free, The Slowworm’s Song and The Land in Winter, which won the Winston Graham Historical Prize and the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction in 2025.
