Echoes of the Gulf is a historical espionage thriller that follows George Kovac’s transformation from a street-level hoodlum in 1936 East Harlem to a vital operative in the fight against Nazi tyranny. George initially finds himself caught in the ＂dirt work＂ of local mobsters, but his obsession with crossword puzzles and a ＂head for the books＂ leads him to a respectable job at the Roosevelt Hotel.

His moral anchor is Maggie Králová, a childhood friend whose academic ambitions mirror George’s own desire for a ＂clean＂ future. Their paths diverge when Maggie accepts a college scholarship, gently refusing George’s marriage proposal with the firm belief that ＂we can only save ourselves first＂.

George’s life takes a dangerous turn when his pattern-recognition skills uncover anomalies surrounding a mysterious guest, Herr Keller, and a clandestine Nazi plot known as Operation Blue Marlin. Recruited by the FBI and Naval Intelligence, George is paired with the gritty Marty O’Connor and the brilliant codebreaker Evelyn West. The mission unspools from Manhattan to the humid docks of Havana and the sun-drenched streets of Key West, as they race to dismantle a U-boat relay network intended to cripple American shipping.

The narrative reaches a pulse-pounding climax at Key Largo. In a final confrontation to stop a German radio network, a gaunt aide named Schmidt sabotages the communication relay, declaring that ＂some duties are higher than orders＂ before being executed by Keller. The mission is a success, but it comes at a profound cost: Evelyn West is tragically shot after throwing herself into the path of a bullet intended for George. In her final moments, she urges George to ＂finish it＂ and move on with his life.

The story concludes in present-day Florida, where an elderly George lives a quiet life with his wife, Maggie. He reflects on the blue marlin etched into his floor-a keepsake of the ＂precise violence＂ and the transformative love of a partner whose sacrifice enabled his eventual peace.
