This book follows one man’s journey to break free from the constraints of religious fundamentalism, unquestioned obedience to authority, an education that taught him what to think rather than how to think, and the culture of Southern White Supremacy. Along the way, he revisits lessons from well-meaning parents who themselves were shaped by dogma. His achievements in athletics opened him to new perspectives that challenged the certainty of his early beliefs. Later, doctoral studies in guidance and counseling equipped him with tools to help develop an independent belief system. This is Harles Cone’s story of personal growth, intellectual liberation, and a shift from rigid certainty to an understanding that life is an unending mystery to be experienced, not a problem to be solved nor a dogma to be believed.
