In 1880, Samantha Slater, a feisty 19-year old, comes to the central Texas town of Lowell’s Crossing to take a job as a typewriter operator at the Lowell's Crossing Lone Star newspaper. Before the day is over, George Stanley, her new boss, is dead, tromped by a runaway horse, and Samantha’s nose for news is twitching. She doesn’t believe that his spirited horse, Black Devil, killed him. The adventurous young lady becomes obsessed with finding the truth and in the process runs into danger of her own.
