Via contacts in his illegal Special Investigations Unit, Strike learns that President Jorrak may be attempting to resurrect his discredited Predatorbot Programme. The suspect operation is far away from the Central Worlds, on Mwinyi.

A woman is kidnapping big cats on that planet. Strike suspects the woman is Merrill Vatan. But surely one of Nyla’s sisters wouldn’t have anything to do with the evil Predatorbot Programme. Would she?

Strike sends Snap and his captain Bahar down to the planet to find out. But before they can locate the mystery woman Strike learns that a local gang boss has ordered her execution.
