Nakami (cultural history, Seisen U., Tokyo) traces the intellectual development of Japanese thinker Yanagi (1889-1961), emphasizing how by the time Japan was invading Asia and enforcing a cultural assimilation policy on its colonies and occupied territories, he was arguing that multiple ethnic groups and cultures could coexist, that peace could not be achieved by painting the world in one color.
