Beginning with the first official football game played by K-State in 1896, the purple-clad gridders always struggled to find respectability. The Wildcats had only an occasional good season and individual star on the field. But the fact is that during the '50s, '60s and '70s, losing records and disappointing seasons became the standard in Manhattan.
