Bridget has been wishing she could leave her village, Toscag, on the Scottish Isle of Lewis since she got there forty years ago. She’s become a lot more desperate since her neighbour, Angus, was murdered and her husband disappeared to the mainland. As soon as she can get the money, she’ll leave too.

Inspector Meek, overwhelmed by his marriage breakdown, is trying to investigate Angus’s death. The villagers spy on each constantly but saw nothing on the night of the murder.

Will Bridget escape from the island in time, and will Meek find the murderer? Against the powerful currents within the community, both Bridget and Inspector Meek struggle to stay afloat.
