In 1880, Samantha Slater, a feisty 19-year old, comes to the central Texas town of Lowell’s Crossing to take a job as a typewriter operator at the Lowell's Crossing Lone Star newspaper. Before the day is over, George Stanley, her new boss, is dead, tromped by a runaway horse, and Samantha’s nose for news is twitching.
