C. John Minford was awarded his doctoral degree from Australian National University in 1980. He has taught Chinese literature and literary translation in China, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Prior to his retirement in September 1999, he was Chair Professor of Translation and Director of the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Among his many important works are: the Penguin Classics edition of The Story of the Stone (co-translator), Classical, Modern and Humane: Essays in Chinese Literature (co-editor). His most recent publication is The Deer and the Cauldron, the English translation of a popular martial arts novel written by Louis Cha.Joseph S. M. Lau graduated from the National Taiwan University with a B.A. degree in 1960 and then received his doctoral degree from Indiana University in 1966. He is now the Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Chinese at Lingnan University. Being a renowned scholar, translator, literary critic and novelist, he has written extensively in both English and Chinese. Some of his major works include: (in English) The Unbroken Chain: An Anthology of Taiwan Fiction Since 1926 (editor); (in Chinese) Tangrenjie de Xiaoshuo Shijie (The literary world of Chinatown), Ercan youji (The travel notes of Ercan); (Chinese translation) George Orwell's 1984.
