There's always time to realize at least some of your goals. Daniel Smithson is a computer genius who invents a radically new computer with apparently limitless memory and a holographic keyboard and screen. The computer is worn in a wristband and completely redefines the meaning of personal computers. It is so technologically advanced that it immediately becomes the "must have" toy. The sales make him almost unimaginably rich. He now has the time and the money to indulge himself and complete an artificial intelligence program he has been working on for all his working life. The code had become so complicated and sophisticated that he had never before found a computer powerful enough to run the program. With the limitless memory and the almost light speed processing power of his new computer, he finishes it.

Using the AI program, Daniel and his wife, Lisa, who is a brain surgeon, work on developing a brain scanner in the hope of curing people, especially children, with brain damage. Using the brain scanner technology they also upgrade the AI program until they have something so sophisticated it appears to have a personality all of its own. They name the program Ann after the acronym that defines it - Artificial Neural Network, and using the holographic generator in the original computer, design a holographic body for her.

They have Ann create a time travel program but before they have the chance to do any time traveling someone tries to kill Daniel
