Knowledge is Power!
Dear Readers,
As I am writing this letter, there are about 5 million COVID-19 confirmed cases worldwide. Many are living in countries lacking proper medical resources. We are lucky to live in Taiwan with an effective epidemic control team and good medical care system.
The new coronavirus is a new virus that we know little about. Hence we are afraid and anxious about the pandemic. I would like to thank Tzu Chi Communication and Culture Foundation at the invitation of writing this book. It is important to introduce COVID-19 related knowledge to children and parents. Knowledge is power. We can learn how to protect ourselves from the infection by learning more about the virus.
We choose to publish this book in a picture book format so readers over the age of 10 can understand the terminology and knowledge of COVID-19 on their own. The scientific knowledge is made more approachable thanks to our illustrator—Red Chen. We hope to present the SARS-CoV-2 in a colorful and amusing design rather than horrible and evil because all organisms live interdependently on Earth. If we respect the existence of other living beings and protect the ecosystems, the chances of viruses jeopardizing humans could be much reduced.
This book helps me recall the days when I used to make picture books with my son. We “published” a few and presented them to our neighbors as gifts, but never kept the original copies. To me, this book is a great reminiscence of those years.
This book is also in memory of my friend—Miss Chia-Huei Hsin, who contributed most of her life to children’s literature and was honored by the Golden Tripod Award before she passed away. She told me that only few researchers read my scientific papers, but many more can be influenced by a good children’s picture book. Her words motivated me greatly in the making of this book.
Good scientific papers make significant contribution in the development of research and knowledge. Chia-Huei’s words made me realize the importance of transforming profound scientific knowledge into sentences that everyone understands. I met Chia-Huei when I was hosting Love Reading , the Dai-Ai TV program, several years ago. On the show, I introduced her picture book—The Hope Provided by a Violin—a beautiful and meaningful story that truly moved me. I would like to dedicate this book to my friendship with Chia-Huei and I hope to spread scientific knowledge with a colorful palette.
Most importantly, I hope the pandemic is gone when this book is published.
Best wishes and Good health.
May everyone live in peace and good health.
