Molecular biology, field of science concerned with studying the chemical structures and processes of biological phenomena that involve the basic units of life, molecules. This book of molecular biology is focused especially on nucleic acids (e.g., DNA and RNA) and proteins macromolecules that are essential to life processes and how these molecules interact and behave within cells. Molecular biology emerged in the 1930s, having developed out of the related fields of biochemistry, genetics, and biophysics; today it remains closely associated with those fields.
