Afrobeat. Politics. Spirits. August 2 1997. Africa’s foremost musician, the mysterious and magical Fela Anikulapo Kuti dies from AIDS complications. He had invented a new musical genre called Afrobeat which was a fusion of African rhythms, jazz and funk. In his music heavily laced with politics and spirituality, he probed possibilities and reflected on our existence. The author took notes when Fela and four other members of the Afrika 70 Organisation were charged with murder in 1993.
