Method of Giving Ritual Bath to Deceased (Hanafi)

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

All praise is due to Allah Almighty, the Creator of life and death, the One Who has honored humanity and provided clear guidance for all phases of existence - including how to deal with death and honor the deceased. Peace and endless blessings be upon our beloved Master, Prophet Muhammad Mustafa ﷺ, whose noble teachings guide us in every aspect of life and afterlife preparation.

Islam is a complete code of life that not only instructs its followers on how to live righteously but also on how to deal with those who pass away with honor, care, and adherence to divine commands. Among the most critical acts after death are Tajheez (preparation of the body) and Takfeen (shrouding), which include giving the Ghusl (ritual bath) to the deceased. According to the Hanafi school of thought, this responsibility is a Fard Kifayah-a communal obligation. If no one performs it, the entire community bears the sin, but if some fulfill it, the rest are absolved.

This book, Method of Giving Ritual Bath to Deceased (Hanafi), has been carefully compiled to serve as a practical and spiritual guide. It begins by emphasizing the virtue of sending Salat upon the Holy Prophet ﷺ and recognizing the signs of a blessed death. It then discusses the concept and importance of funeral rites in Islam and outlines the basic legal rulings related to Ghusl and shrouding.

A clear, step-by-step description is given for performing Ghusl for both men and women, including proper intentions, essential etiquettes, and recommended Sunnahs. Special attention has been paid to providing guidance on sensitive cases such as children, hermaphrodites, and how to handle the used water. Furthermore, the book highlights the spiritual excellence and reward associated with these acts of service, along with precautions, common mistakes, and Madani pearls (beneficial tips) for those entrusted with these duties.

Also included are details regarding the shrouding process, the correct method of wrapping a male or female body, the recommended number and type of cloths, and the significance of providing a dignified farewell in accordance with Islamic tradition.

Our intention is that this work serves as both an educational resource and a means of encouraging Muslims to take this obligation seriously and perform it correctly. May Allah accept this humble effort, forgive our shortcomings, and grant us all the ability to fulfill the rights of the deceased in the most honorable and rewarding way, according to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
