        The judicious use of nitrogen in crop production is highly desirable for both economic and environmental reasons, because much of the nitrogen applied to crop plants goes unused, resulting in environmental problems and waste. This book reviews the practical and theoretical aspects of nitrogen management in crop production.

        Chapters address the functions of nitrogen, nitrogen loss in the soil–plant system, diagnostic techniques for nitrogen requirements, management of soil organic matter, nitrogen interaction with other nutrients, biological nitrogen fixation by legumes, and management practices to improve nitrogen use efficiency.
