According to the authors, rather than a textbook about how to give tests and grades, this is "a book about assessment with a heart," for teachers of grade kindergarten through high school. It considers the impact of assessment decisions and practices on student motivation as well as student learning, and on typical students as well as students with different abilities and backgrounds. Coverage includes performance assessment, classroom testing, and a variety of ways to summarize and communicate about student achievement. Numerous sample assessment instruments, worksheets, and tables are included. This second edition offers more material on reducing bias in assessment, and a new section on anchoring test questions in learning objectives. There is also expanded information on developmental issues, and updated information on the implications of No Child Left Behind for teachers and students.
