Primatologist Janet West is discovered, apparently murdered, in Uganda in 1977. Seventeen years later her diary appears, claiming that she had successfully mated with a gorilla and become pregnant. A panel of experts is charged with investigating the validity of the diary entries and starts a journey that takes them to Auschwitz, to Moscow and deep into the Ural Mountains, where a community of thousands of gorilla-human hybrids had lived.
