A German-born immigrant to the United States, Albert Wehde has been a man of many trades. He was altogether a traveller, an explorer, a gold seeker, a revolutionary, an ardent patriot of two fatherlands, an arms smuggler and a spy. As Wehde wanders throughout Central America and Asia, fate and chance brought this strong character to become a historical figure of the first importance, especially so during the First World War, this pioneering era of espionage and secret war. This is his autobiography, a sincere tale, written in a light-hearted manner, with humour as every great sufferer learns to master and wield, grave when needed, although without complaint. As such, it mirrors life, its complexities, its challenges, its beauties also, and this alone has earned this work a special place in American literature and, we hope, in the reader’s heart.
