The day before she is to be married to her fiancé, Shang Zhisheng, a faculty at the same school, Chang, who is disappointed in love, takes her own life.
Years later, Wang Qi stumbles across a copy of the book "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio," by the Qing Dynasty writer Pu Songling at a flea market in New York. On the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, he is transported in a dream to the book's fairyland, following along and undergoing a madcap journey through the Moon Palace.
