從18世紀開始，西方人就在十分認真地觀察中國。
他們畫了大量的圖像、拍攝了大量的照片，並將其帶回了西方，讓西方人看見中國是什麼樣子。
戛爾尼使團隨團畫家亞歷山大，在從澳門到北京的往返旅行中，創作了大量反映當時中國風土人情的畫作，隨后在歐洲引起轟動。這是西方畫家首次如此詳盡地觀察和描繪中國，也是將中國描繪得如此充滿神奇浪漫色彩和異國情調的最后一個時期。
書稿收集了亞歷山大僅有兩本著作《中國的服裝》《中國人的服飾和習俗圖鑒》及一些罕見單張版畫。
兩本著作合並出版，這在國內外均為首次。
威廉•亞歷山大（William Alexander，1767～1816）：生於英國肯特郡，1784年進入皇家美術學院繪畫專業學習。1792年作為制圖員，馬戛爾尼使團畫家托馬斯•希基的助手訪問了中國，創作大量的速寫和水彩畫。1794年回到倫敦后，亞歷山大先是過了一段寫生、以畫會友的生活。1802年成為英國畫家軍事學院的教師。1808年任大英博物館古文物部的助理館員，直至去世。著有《中國的服裝》（1805年）《中國人的服飾和習俗圖鑒》（1815年）。
趙省偉：廈門大學歷史系畢業，目前專注於中國歷史影像的收藏和出版，藏有海量中國主題的法國、德國報紙和書籍。著有《遺失在西方的中國史：法國彩色畫報記錄的中國1850～1937》《西洋鏡：海外史料看甲午》等書。
邱麗媛：北京大學中文系畢業，現任教於北京華文學院，研究方向為中外文化交流傳播。著有《西洋鏡：1907，北京—巴黎汽車拉力賽》等書。

序
近年來, 在搜集、出版西方有關中國主題的影像過程中，我發現，從18 世紀開始，西方就在十分認真地觀察中國。他們畫了大量的圖像、拍攝了大量的照片，並將其帶回了西方，讓西方人看見中國是什麼樣子。對於海外中國史料的挖掘，近十年來出版界同仁已經做出了很多嘗試，《老照片》《溫故》等成功案例給了后進者足夠的信心和啟示。不過他們的側重點主要在老照片，民國以后的歷史是其重中之重，這就給后來者留下了很大的開掘空間——民國以前的早期影像歷史。
提到早期影像，威廉•亞歷山大自然是不能繞過的人物。據1990 年在巴黎出版《威廉•亞歷山大為「停滯的帝國」所描繪的形象》一書的佩雷菲特稱，他一共收集到2000 多幅復制品。
