This book introduces pre-modern Chinese primary learning materials from the Han 漢Dynasty to the Qing清Dynasty, a span of some two thousand years. Historical Chinese children’s primers include the Thousand Character Classic《千字文》, Kaimeng Yaoxun《開蒙要訓》, Mengqiu《蒙求》, Taigong Jiajiao《太公家教》, Tuyuan Ce《兔園冊》, Three Character Classic 《三字經》, Hundred Family Surnames 《百家姓》, Poems by a Thousand Poets 《千家詩》, Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars 《二十四孝》, Youxue Qionglin《幼學瓊林》, Longwen Bianying 《龍文鞭影》, Wise Sayings from the Past 《昔時賢文》, and Dizi Gui 《弟子規》. These writings offer a valuable window into the cultural values transmitted to children in pre-modern times, and even now influence ordinary people throughout the Chinese cultural world. This book is addressed to scholars of Chinese children’s primers, and researchers in the field of Chinese literacy education.
