若從古典時代算起，西方神話學已有兩千多年的歷史，對於“神話”的解釋與定位，其間出現多次起伏與逆轉。在本書中，布魯斯·林肯不再嘗試對“神話”做出明確界定，而是考察這一範疇在不同歷史時期如何以不同方式被使用，進而探究這一過程中其地位、用法所發生的戲劇性變化。

全書分三部分。第一部分從古希臘早期文獻入手，對“秘索斯”與“邏各斯”的原初內涵進行探究。作者認為，在前柏拉圖時代，“邏各斯”並非表示理性的論述，而是指諸如蠱惑、欺騙、詭辯等可疑的言語行為；“秘索斯”則是一種擁有很高權威的話語類型，具有讓人相信或服從的力量。第二部分首先考察文藝復興至二戰時期神話學的發展，然後以威廉·瓊斯、尼采、杜梅齊爾為對象，探討這一時期出現的浪漫主義、民族主義(尤其是雅利安主義)思潮如何引發神話學的復興。第三部分首先考察二戰結束至上世紀末神話學的新動向，然後通過不同類型的個案研究，提出一種新的研究方案，同時表明自己的立場與結論：無論神話還是神話學，均是一種敘事形式的意識形態。

蘇永前1978年生，甘肅莊浪人。2013年7月畢業于中國社會科學院研究生院，獲文學博士學位。曾在閩南師範大學任教，現為西安外國語大學中文學院教授、文學人類學研究中心主任。主要研究領域為文學人類學、神話學。出版專著《20世紀前期中國文學人類學實踐研究》、譯著《女神的語言：西方文明早期象徵符號解讀》(第一譯者)。
