在2007年金融市場危機之後，國際貿易停滯不前。但是，對於急劇的保護主義激增的恐懼並沒有實現。保護主義措施的增加遠遠低於1930年蕭條期間的增長。根據以往商業周期的經驗，它比預期的要少。WTO和其他貿易協定和條約在保持經濟衰退的過程中保持抑製作用發揮了重要作用。同樣重要的是，世界已經開始逐漸認識到國際貿易作為一種合作博弈的性質，當合作協議從其他方進行重新調整或每個人都參與這種機會主義行動時，從合作協議轉移的收益將成為嚴重損失。
然而，儘管取得了進展，但保護主義政策的近視衝動遠未實現。在WTO框架內外達成進一步自由化協議的任務是艱鉅的。因此，雙邊，區域和多邊協定將與多邊條約一起推行。貿易協議本質上都是合作博弈。所涉及的原則與WTO條約的原則類似，即產生相互收益並儘量減少偏離協議的動機，同時考慮到代表參與方的決策者的偏好。考慮到其成員的發展水平和政策偏好的多樣性，世貿組織在使合作成果成為現實方面取得了成功。它為完成貿易談判提供了很好的經驗教訓。
