In 2013, after approximately twenty-five years of working for the same company, the forty-seven-year-old wife and mother lost her job when her company downsized. Luckily, however, she received a generous severance package that gave her the time and freedom she needed to pursue her dream of becoming a published author.

McDane dedicated her newfound free time to rewriting and expanding a project she’d begun nearly twenty years ago as a serial chapter-a-week endeavor to entertain her coworkers, who encouraged her to put her pen to paper.
