作者簡介:
About the Author
Anna Sewell was born in 1820 in England. The family were Quakers and she had a brother called Phillip.
Anna’s mother was a successful author of children’s books. She taught Anna at home until she was 12, concentrating on natural history and moral education. When she was 14, Anna fell while walking home from school in the rain, and injured both her ankles. She never recovered completely and had to use a crutch to stand or walk.
Anna never married or had children, but lived at home, and remained very close to her mother, Mary Wright Sewell, helping her to edit her books.
Anna traveled with her parents to a number of European spas in the hope of improving her health. She met various writers, artists, and philosophers there and enjoyed sharing ideas and opinions with them.
Sewell’s only book was Black Beauty, which she wrote between 1871 and 1877. She dictated the text to her mother. Anna originally wrote Black Beauty for people who worked with horses, but if soon became a popular children’s story.
Anna died on 25th April 1878 just five months after the publication of the book. Her home is now a Museum.
