Author's Note
The inspiration for this picture book began with the National Palace Museum. After discussions with the publisher, we decided to focus on a theme that everyone is familiar with—animals. However, what we want to share goes beyond the animal paintings themselves. We also explore the fascinating stories behind them: Where did these animals come from? Where were they kept after arriving at the palace? And did the emperors truly like them?
For me, the greatest challenge in creating a knowledge-based picture book is finding a way to transform accurate historical information into images in my own artistic style, making it engaging and accessible for readers. This project was even more challenging, as it involved re-creating classic masterpieces that have been passed down for centuries. At the same time, I added a few playful details to bring a touch of mischief and fun to the artworks. With the support of an excellent editorial team and outstanding design, we hope this book will offer readers a fresh perspective and a new way to discover the treasures of the National Palace Museum.

Once upon a time, the emperor had a zoo. There were lots of rare animals from other countries.
Follow Qianlong Emperor, he would tell you all the amazing stories, peeping the interesting knowledge of them.
This book centers on animal paintings from the National Palace Museum in Taipei. It tells the stories of these animals, many of which originated overseas and were brought to the East as diplomatic gifts, highlighting the cultural exchanges between East and West while weaving in historical insights. Featuring original paintings alongside the author's reinterpretations, the book invites readers to compare and appreciate both, sparking imagination and offering a fresh perspective on ancient artifacts.

Author and illustrator:
Yu-Lin Chen holds a Master’s degree in Editing from the Utrecht School of the Arts in the
Netherlands. A lover of walking, nature, and chatting with cats, Chen captures the joys and sorrows of everyday life with a warm and thoughtful touch. Chen’s talent has been recognized twice at the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition in Italy. Authored works include Olympics, Taiwan's Most Beautiful Places – National Parks Map, Taiwan Map, The Secret Path, and The Mountain that Vents.
