CEO’s Words
It actually all originated from the nomadicity of “reception center”!
As a land developer, I have always believed that I am greatly responsible for and have been actively involved in the city’s urban development, architectural design, and lifestyle shaping. People who do not know me well, always doubt me and scoff at what I do; as for those who are familiar with me, they simply do not understand why I have to make my life so hard! But from a long time ago, I have been deeply inspired by a poem by Su Shi: “To what can we liken human life? Perhaps to a wild swan’s footprints on mud or snow: By chance its claws imprint the mud; before it flies off at random, east or west.” Life is short, and we can only leave behind very few things; through the current of time, perhaps nothing will remain in the end. The only thing we can do is to seize the moment.
If we did not do it today, we would regret tomorrow!
“Seize the Opportunity”, I saw the calligraphic work that had been hung in my study. “Fine! Just do it!” With full support from the Chairman Lee Chung-Yi of the Jut Group, the very first exhibition of MUSEUM of TOMORROW project was launched in January 2007, and Jut Foundation for Arts and Architecture was subsequently founded. Clearly, I hoped to create visionary, valuable, and charitable energy through a non-profit organization in the disciplines of architecture, culture, and art. “A Better Tomorrow” thus became our spiritual guideline!
Examining the nature of the land development industry, our primary sector, I realized that we were still in the process of consolidation; the disused lands and buildings that were not being developed had become our most unique assets. The nomadic nature of developers’ “reception centers,” thus, inspired the Foundation’s first project – MUSEUM of TOMORROW. Could we improvise with what we had and provide creative professionals with different pieces of land and buildings as their creative materials or exhibition platforms? Just like nomads, who migrate from place to place to obtain food and find pasture for livestock, we explored the most local and practical issues, and searched for most creative and effective solutions; we were also like a circus that travels around towns and cities, bringing people happiness and new information!
Such “unorthodox ” characteristics have also become the most important genes in the blood of the Jut Foundation! Along the way, we carried out inventory of resources of the group, demands of the society, and dreams of ourselves and partners; without any hesitation, we learned and made improvements, and contemplated and took actions. In the blink of an eye, ten years have passed. The 4 flagship projects: MUSEUM of TOMORROW, Project UrbanCore, Jut Architecture Academy, and Jut Art Museum, have gradually taken shape, and continued to drift within the city of Taipei, leaving behind footprints and trails, which we hope would influence many people’s lives and bring positive energy to the society, forming an alternative landscape of Taiwan. These diverse and substantial progresses and accumulated achievements are the contents of this 10th anniversary album.
Over the past ten years, we have learned through practical experience; we have always imagined the future while standing on today’s soil. I have come to the deep realization that none of these could be achieved by one person, or one organization; instead, these achievements are the fruits of the participation and support of countless experts, scholars, architects, artists, designers, curators, cultural workers, art administrators, government officials, and the public, as well as the investment of various resources by the Jut Group. I sincerely appreciate all people for selflessly contributing to our cause. Looking ahead, new issues and challenges are present in front of us, which we shall face with great determination and effort. I am very confident that in the next decade, Jut Foundation for Arts and Architecture will continue to create temporal values, and become a constructive cultural entity in Taiwan. I promise that we will always give all we have and do our best!
