Ten disastrous seasons, a series of new owners, and the decline of the Fenway Park locale plagued the club, and Red Sox fans began to doubt that there had actually been atonement for the “original sin” of selling Babe Ruth. It appeared that the Curse had not been broken—only interrupted. Then, a scandal that involved the best pitcher in the majors forced a miraculous midseason deal that sent the Yankee ace, C. J. Panthro, to the rejuvenated Red Sox, who were chasing their first championship in over a decade.
