Melpomene is a Spanish literature professor born in the UK to a Cantonese father. She works in a fictional Singaporean university and devotes her literary pursuits to writing an erotic novel intentionally devoid of literary qualities, as she is convinced of the emptiness of the modern world. This emptiness is epitomised by the existential void that obsesses her since the suicide of her best friend in Seville.
