In 1983, then Arizona Gov. Bruce Babbitt requested Mary Lou to give a speech to his executive staff due to her successful career. After she addressed the staff at an informal gathering, she thought that was the end of it when actually, it was just the beginning. The members of the executive she spoke with that afternoon began calling and stopping by her office to find out more and to see if she would mentor them. After a few days, Mary Lou’s secretary came to her to tell her that she could not keep up the pace of her work and counseling everyone. That is when Mary Lou decided to write this book.
