Set in the early 1970s in a corner of Midwest Nigeria-now Delta State-Palm Fronds in August is a coming-of-age tale rooted in the red soil of war, quiet defiance, and tangled beliefs. Through the eyes of Diana, strong and defiant-a girl determined to be and see more than the four walls of her mother’s hut-we see the layered world of the Midwest: vibrant festivals, sacred rites, the distant rumble of war, and the unspoken strength of a people long labeled as ＂savages.＂ We meet Emeke, the village nuisance with something to prove.
