It’s 1997 and Sarina Massey is a vampire with a conflicted heart. Being undead has its pluses, yet apart from her sister, her family can no longer relate to her.
Thankfully, Sarina can throw herself into work as a detective working for the government’s After Dark Department in Standfordt, a small town in North Queensland. With her partner, Donny, who is as annoying as he is good-looking, she upholds laws related to vamps.
Vampires can present a danger to humans, so heavy regulations are in place to increase safety. The government controls where vamps can eat and which ones can enter Australia.
Sarina and Donny are placed on the case when the mayor’s son, Steve, goes missing. Soon, a witness is murdered, someone they know is incriminated, and things get tricky with Sarina’s human boyfriend, Will.
Will has remained supportive while Sarina grapples with the concern that he deserves better. What is she going to do about that? Will it ever really work out? Then there’s Donny, with whom Sarina has a thorny attraction she tries to ignore.
But when it seems something big is going down in little old Standfort, Sarina may risk everything to solve the mystery. Even her darkest secret could be revealed.
There will be losses.
